In Britain the storey at ground level is called the ground floor. A single-storey house is one with a ground floor only; a two-storey house has a ground floor with a first floor above it; a three-storey house has a second floor above the first, and so on. In America, the floor at ground level is called the first floor; the British first floor is the second floor, and so on. Cellars, basements, and mezzanine floors are not counted in either reckoning.

For storey and floor see floor, storey. The plural form is storeys. In AmE story is the usual form and its plural is stories; and what in BrE is a three-storeyed house is in AmE a three-storied house.
